Isn’t it crazy how we’re always told to follow our passion, but then there’s this whole thing about needing a stable job for security? It’s like we’re stuck between chasing our dreams or settling for something that pays the bills. You are one of the luckiest people if your passion is your work. For most of us, we face the eternal dilemma: should we follow our passion or choose stability in our careers? And let’s be real, both have their pros and cons.
Following our passion sounds amazing, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to wake up every day excited about what they’re doing? However, I believe that the commonly held assumption that “if we follow our passion, we will achieve maximum happiness” is not entirely accurate. When you think about it, pursuing happiness through passion comes with certain risks. It is full of uncertainties that can affect our own happiness. Living with our passion can drain our happiness too since we are almost always in a state of fear and uncertainties. Research also shows that the human brain is designed to seek safety, which makes it harder for us to take risks. So, should we really take unnecessary risks? Or should we follow our passion regardless? Do we take the leap and hope for the best, or do we play it safe?
On the contrary, choosing a stable career path might provide us with a sense of stability. Choosing a stable job means we’ve got financial security. We can pay the bills, take care of our loved ones, and maybe even splurge on ourselves once in a while. Research also shows that humans are happiest when we make someone else happy. However, living this life can also feel empty. We can become consumed by the innate desire for money, working like robots, buying things we want, experiencing momentary happiness, but then feeling stressed again while continuing the work. It may provide financial security, but it may lack the excitement and satisfaction that comes from doing what we love. And don’t even get me started on the idea of stability. I mean, look at what happened with COVID-19 – one minute everything’s fine, and the next, millions of people are out of work. So much for stability, right?
So, what’s the answer, Eile? Honestly, I don’t have one. It’s one of those things you have to figure out for yourself. I can only provide you with a reflection, a thought to ponder. But here’s what I do know – there’s no right or wrong choice. As you can see, both options have their pros and cons. There will always be regrets on both sides, and that’s okay. You make your choice and live with it. Let’s now focus more on finding small moments of happiness in our lives. Whether you follow your passion, stick with a stable job, or find some middle ground, as long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters. So, keep smiling and keep doing you!
